Dale Carnegie's Achievements

Dale Carnegie Training began in 1912 as a public speaking class for adults at the YMCA in New York City. As Dale Carnegie taught public speaking to many, he realized that his students had a variety of problems. It was not just how to speak in public, but how to make friends, how to influence others, and how to motivate oneself.

Dale Carnegie worked diligently to solve the problems of his students, seeking out their needs through classroom interaction and by reading relevant books for answers. The culmination of these efforts led to the release of “How to Win Friends and Influence People” and “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.”

Since then, Dale Carnegie Training has been continuously developing to meet the changing needs of time, but the core essence has not changed. More than a century after its establishment, over 9 million people have graduated from the training, which is based on teaching people how to speak effectively and to acquire problem-solving skills that are essential for working.

Buffet still keeps his graduation certificate displayed in his office.

Who is Dale Carnegie?

Dale Carnegie grew up in a very poor farming family in Missouri in 1888. He had to get up at 4:00 am, milk the cows and then walk a mile to school every day. Even while Dale attended college, he was ashamed of the poor quality of his clothing compared to the other students.

After graduating from college, Dale became a successful salesman, but he moved to New York City to pursue his passion which was acting. There, he enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he saw firsthand the difficulties of becoming an actor.

Seeking a new direction, Dale decided to spend his daytime reading and writing novels while teaching classes at night for adults, as he had also wanted to become a teacher. Dale felt that the public speaking classes he had taken proved to be the most beneficial for him as a salesman, so he decided to start one himself at the YMCA on 125th Street in New York City. This was in 1912, the year of the Stockholm Olympics, Japan's first participation in the Olympic Games.

As Dale taught public speaking to many, he realized that his students had a variety of problems. It was not just how to speak in public, but how to make friends, how to influence others, and how to motivate oneself. Over a 24-year period of practical research and development, he honed some universal principles which solved those people problems for his students. These principles became the basis of Dale Carnegie Training.

Dale Carnegie passed away in 1955, but his wife, Dorothy Carnegie, carried on his legacy, and the training he developed is still being offered around the world today.

Dale Carnegie Training has a history of over 100 years and has continued in Japan for over 50 years since its inception in 1963. The content is always kept contemporary and valuable for us today.
